Western Sisaala – Phonological alternations in plural formation

چکیده
Introduction This paper provides an original phonological analysis of some of the plural noun formations of Western Sisaala. Western Sisaala has several noun classes. The classes are distinguished by the suffixes to used to form the singular and plural. Moran (2006) tentatively identifies a few noun classes. In this squib, I discuss a subset of the plural forms attested in the language. Many of these forms are similar but I distinguish three different classes of plurals and describe the associated strategies and phonological processes involved in the derivation of these forms. The remainder of this paper begins with some brief background on Western Sisaala and its tentatively identified noun classes. Then I present the examples of the data that I discuss in the analysis. The analysis section is a presentation of the three distinct classes of plural morphemes that I have identified, the alternations of each plural morpheme and the phonological processes that account for the data. I conclude this paper with a brief discussion of the main points of the analysis.

Voicing Polarity in Luo
Alderete (2001) cites voicing alternations in Luo plural and possession marking as compelling evidence for transderivational antifaithfulness (TAF) constraints. In this paper, I show that a TAF analysis of Luo plural formation meets empirical problems, and argue for an alternative approach based on the interaction of faithfulness and markedness constraints in a containmentbased version of Optim...

Phonological alternations often serve to modify forms so that they respect a phonotactic restriction that applies across the language. For example, the voicing alternation in the English plural produces word-final sequences that respect the general ban against a voiceless obstruent followed by a voiced one. Since Chomsky and Halle [1], it has been assumed that an adequate theory of phonology sh...
متن کاملUsing Distributional Statistics to Acquire Morphophonological Alternations: Evidence from Production and Perception
Morphophonological alternations, such as the voicing alternation that arises in a morphological paradigm due to final-devoicing in Dutch, are notoriously difficult for children to acquire. This has previously been attributed to their unpredictability. In fact, the presence or absence of a voicing alternation is partly predictable if the phonological context of the word is taken into account, an...

The voicing contrast is neutralized syllable and word finally in Dutch and German, leading to alternations within the morphological paradigm (e.g., Dutch 'bed(s)', be[t]-be[d]en, German 'dog(s)', Hun[t]-Hun[d]e). Despite structural similarity, language-specific morphological, phonological and lexical properties impact on the distribution of this alternation in the two languages. Previous acquis...

German nouns may alternate from singular to plural in two different ways. Some singular forms that end in a voiceless obstruent have a plural in which this obstruent is voiced. Another alternation concerns the vowel. Some singular forms with a back vowel have a plural form in which this back vowel is front. For each noun it has to be established individually whether it alternates or not. The vo...
